Excerpt:
Saturday night was Josh's night, and he seemed nervous. Throughout much of the afternoon he paced back and forth, going out to the garage but coming right back into the kitchen again, glancing at the clock, seemingly not knowing what to do with his hands.
Finally my curiosity got the best of me. "What's up? Why are you so nervous?"
He shrugged and shook his head, started to walk back out to the garage but then changed his mind and walked over to where I was sitting at the kitchen table.
He squatted down next to me and took my hand in his. "You know I love you, right?"
Uh oh. No good conversation starts with a question like that.
"Yes..." I waited for him to get to the point.
"Well, I've got something planned for us tonight and I'm not sure how you're going to react to it. It's possible that you'll be into it, but it's also possible that you'll get really pissed at me."
"What is it?" I asked.
"I don't want to tell you. I want you to keep an open mind. So let's just go, and if you decide you don't want to be there, we'll come back home. Okay?"
"Okay, but what could be so bad that it makes you this nervous?"
"I just don't want you to be mad at me for choosing something that's...much farther outside of your comfort zone than anything we've done so far."
Whoa. What the hell had he gotten us into now?
